James Sennott and Alba Blanco
“Ugh that kid wouldn’t let go,” Rohn said.
Taking the headpiece of his Smokey the Bear costume off, finally having his sight unrestricted again, he smelled the scent of the forest he was presenting in. Having a much-needed break from the sweaty interior of the suit, he thought, Why couldn’t we have just done the presentations for the school inside? Suddenly, a gust of wind blew past him. In truth, it was a welcome break from the clammy feeling of the past two hours. “Boss said I could have a smoke break, as long as none of those damn kids see me,” he muttered to himself.
Lighting a cigarette was a force of habit now, only doable with the lighter he had used for so many shows. Abruptly, a strong gust blew the cigarette right out of his hands, along with the still lit lighter. He heard the sound of a bell. Sadly, his break was over. “I don’t have time for this. It will put itself out anyway.”
Rohn started to walk away, and as he entered the stage, the dry leaves on the forest floor spawned a sudden and all-consuming flame. Fifteen minutes later and not even close to done with the next show, he got another break. Albeit this one the kids got a live demonstration of how fast fire spreads.
