The teahouse district in Kanazawa, now a popular spot for traditional sweets and crafts, is a well-preserved historical geiko district (geiko is the local term for geisha, a traditional female entertainer). Some houses and closed businesses sit inconspicuously away from the crowds. Buildings and structures like these always catch my eye. Despite not having a single soul in sight, they give a sense of having a rich history, even if these places are now shuttered or abandoned. I especially enjoy seeing old traditional houses beside more modern buildings, such as a closed diner in a traditional Japanese building beside a block with a second-floor 麻雀 (mahjong) parlour.
